Riverside County sheriff's homicide detectives are investigating the death of a suspected drunken driver who was arrested and died shortly after.
Witnesses had reported a red Ford F-150 driving erratically that veered off the road into the dirt at Van Buren Boulevard near Mockingbird Canyon, according to a sheriff's report.
Eugene Hawkins, 69, of Riverside, was arrested by California Highway Patrol officers on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol, sheriff's officials said.
As Hawkins was being driven to the Riverside County jail, police said he became unconscious.
CHP officers diverted the cruiser to Riverside Community Hospital.
Paramedics tried to resuscitate him, but he died at the hospital, according to the report.
An autopsy is planned this week to determine the cause of death.
